About

I want my work to make people feel seen, and I firmly believe that if all art is political, then mine should be activist. Growing up, there was very little representation for me and my experiences, especially in fantasy and science fiction, and I have always understood that many others have even less. Often, when I saw people with features like mine, they were villainized or turned into unrefined brutes, and I was almost into my adult years before I saw representation of queer identities. My work challenges the preconceptions and problematic ideals in the fiction world while providing a place for the underrepresented to see themselves in a beautiful, magical world.

Storytelling is essential to my work. I think deeply about the story each piece tells, weaving the “real” and “unreal” worlds together. My main body of work has focused on colors and figure pieces, primarily using digital painting, watercolor, alcohol markers, pen and ink, and words.

I draw inspiration from other visual storytellers who, like myself, have used their art and voices to reimagine worlds and center underrepresented identities. Notable influences are the narrative art of Faith Ringgold and Henry Ossawa Tanner for how they celebrate Black identities, and Gran Fury for their use of modern art as a way of protest and education. I am also inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s animations and the way they blend fantasy and politics.
